picasso, modernism, and oscar de la renta

Sometimes, when a fashion designer cites certain eras or things as inspirations, I can’t quite see the parallels. For Oscar de la Renta’s resort 2012 collection, I was blown away by the Picasso, Cubism, and Modernism references. When you view the clothing side-by-side to pieces of modern art, you can see the inspirations in coloring, lines, and shapes. (above, Picasso’s “Dream”)

Oscar stuck to lots of good, clean lines and kept the palette relatively simple, in classic primary colors and lots of black and white. The collection went a bit off topic towards the end with his beautiful and intricate gowns, but that was to be expected. (above, Picasso’s “Figure.”)

While Piet Mondrian’s works aren’t classified as Cubist like Picasso’s paintings, his famous grid-like art is one of the most recognizable pieces of modern art today. I’m obsessed with anything Mondrian, so I had to include it in my breakdown. (above, a classic Piet Mondrian painting. All model photos courtesy of Vogue)
