Halloween, revisited

One of the first things I did when I got to Seattle was to start interning with Cassandra LaValle of coco+kelley. For the past few months, I’ve helped her out with many projects – but this one was my favorite to date! Cass wanted to do a tablescape loosely inspired by Great Expectations and Mrs. Havisham’s garden, and I got to work helping her make her dream a reality!

Spooky votives, faded garden sculptures and opulent linens were just a few components of this non-traditional Halloween table. So eerie and creepy, but not a fake eyeball or blood and gore in sight!

My favorite part of assisting Cassandra was helping with the cocktail post. I grabbed some fresh rosemary from my garden and set out making a blackberry + rosemary simple syrup. You can find the recipe here, and head over to coco+kelley for the full shoot! All photos by Julie Harmsen for coco+kelley. And yes… HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

orange crush

Interior // Street Style // Tote // Lipstick // Booties

Pantone announced a while ago that the “color of the year” for 2012 was Tangerine Tango. I’ve always been partial to orange myself… that particular red-orange shade just so happens to be one of my favorites, and I’m loving all the orange I’ve been seeing this spring! Whether you’re injecting your house with a pop of color through accents like those ghost chairs, wearing a brightly colored tangerine frock to an outdoor concert, or daring to wear some bright coral lipstick, grab something orange hued and express your joy that winter is over!

inspired by interiors

Sometimes, things just go together. This beautiful interior‘s bright coral walls paired with graphic stripes and metallic accents immediately made me think of some glittery coral heels I spotted over at TopShop (I wish I had seen these before my wedding!) and a bright, graphic bracelet from the House of Harlow.

I love the high gloss blue walls on this living room. The art wall is equally covetable with quirky prints and abstract sketches. This chevron ring set from ASOS pairs nicely with the zig-zag art on the wall, and the preppy-chic vibe the room gives off just screams Tory Burch, whose nude flats are a closet staple.

the selby shoots château bagnolet

Looking for a house in Washington has put a lot of interior design thoughts in my brain, so I’ve been browsing one of my favorite design sources – the Selby. While looking, I came across this beautiful French château that the Selby shot for Hennessy.

I’m loving the subtle red and green color story told throughout the photographs. Impeccably maintained grounds and multi-colored ivy covered walls give way to interiors full of sumptuous crimsons and golds.

Wouldn’t you love to live in a real-life castle, complete with your own greenhouse? I’d move there in a heartbeat.

New York Fashion Week starts tomorrow… although I can’t be there like usual, I’ll still be reporting on my favorite shows and trends right back here. Expect some more art + fashion comparisons coming your way in addition to some show recaps!

color your world

Have you heard of Design Seeds? It’s a beautiful website chock full of palettes inspired by gorgeous photos. Jessica, the creator, is one talented lady – pulling colors out of nature to inspire you for home decor, dressing yourself, your wedding… anything!

I selected the “Winter tones” category and found these gems. You can also search by color, in addition to theme.

All palettes from Design Seeds

If you’re feeling the winter blues like I am (it just keeps snowing here in New York!), a bit of color can go a long way to brightening up your day. I hope you have a nice weekend!

in search of… the perfect piece

All furniture above from Pieces Inc., except the mirrored cabinet

Dear readers… I need your HELP! For a wedding present, my fiance’s lovely uncle has offered to make us a custom piece of furniture… ANY custom piece of furniture we desire. The man is a wonderfully talented craftsman/furniture maker/miracle worker – he once brought my shattered-to-pieces antique secretary desk back to life, complete with detachable legs for easy moving!

So I now have a problem, albeit a wonderful problem… WHAT on earth should we request? We’re in dire need of a dining room table, but we usually favor farmhouse, rustic style setups and we feel like that wouldn’t be putting his crazy talents to their best. I’m drawn to the idea of getting some interesting chairs done paired with a more classic style table… but am I being too boring? I need Emily Henderson to come in and rescue me!

FABulous holiday shopping

A few of my favorite things on sale at Fab.com right now!

It’s pretty rare that I get my Christmas shopping done before the week before Christmas, but this year I was able to accomplish it before the month of December even started. And get this. 90% of it was done on one website. Can you believe it? I’d like to introduce you to my miracle – Fab.com. While I’ve had it up to here with the explosion of flash sale websites (do we REALLY need a flash sale website for strictly t-shirts?), especially ones of the home goods variety, Fab.com is in a league of its’ own. Why? It’s a place to grab quirky, unexpected, and design conscious gifts for everyone on your list at discounted prices. As much as I’d like to buy my entire family cool chotchkies from the MoMa store, I can’t afford it. Fab.com offers the same gifts at a LOT less. There are tons of prints, housewares, clothing, kids toys, and more! I picked some of my favorites above (most under $50), like a cool re-imagined movie poster, a goldfish kite, and some awesomely weird light bulbs. Also, if you’re a design mag junkie like me, they’ve got discounted mag subscriptions too!

I am in no way affiliated with Fab, nor did they pay me for this post. I’m just thrilled to death with the site. If you want to get started, I believe you need an invite to join. If you click this link, consider yourself invited! Happy shopping.

a chic christmas

a chevron christmas

While I love the classic warmth of the homes of my family members, when the FI and I finally settle in to our own home (after three years of moving, we’re ready) I can’t wait to decorate my house for an effortlessly chic Christmas effect.

lofty holiday, rustic candlesticks

I think the key is to use lots of greenery (fresh or not) and balance it with metallics, earth colors, and bits of bright color.

falling for floral fashion

Lately I’ve been really inspired by flowers. I’ve always thought floral arrangements to be a beautiful, creative way to express oneself… but I’m really drawn to wild, colorful bouquets recently. Chalk it up to impending wedding madness, but it’s doing wonders for my fall fashion inspiration. Whether you’re going for a moody aubergine and ink pairing like above or adding pops of red and pink into your autumn attire, it’s hard to go wrong.

For more style inspiration, please check out Sunday Crossbow, a style blog by Emerald. She accomplishes most of her beautiful outfits (including the one above) using mostly thrifted items and manages to look impossibly chic for pennies. It’s refreshing to see budget conscious style in the blogger world of c/o-ed items that end up costing the reader a lot more than “free.”

i’m back… with bling!

So, I’ll admit. Not only did I fall off the blogging train, I fell off the creative cycle as well. For the past few weeks I have been stuck in a boring, greyscaled rut where I didn’t feel like creating anything. I’m not quite sure what happened, but I was stuck.

However… I got engaged! To my darling boyfriend who has been with me through thick and thin for the past many years. He made me a photobook with pictures of us throughout the years and it was romantic, lovely, and everything a girl could hope for. My ring is spectacular too! Anyway, I’m now knee deep in wedding planning, since we’ve got an extremely small window in which to get married next spring because of our work schedules.

We’ll be having a Sunday brunch wedding in our hometown of Dallas, complete with lots of natural light, lake views, a cool warehouse vibe, croquet, and even a jazz band! I am so thrilled! After scouring the internet I think I have come up with a working palette and overall feel for the day. Think romantic reds paired with metallics and tiny accents of marigold and seafoam for unexpected pops of color. My question to you, lovely, is the seafoam too much?

Watch for more creativeness (and posts, yes POSTS!) coming up! My creative rut is over and this girl’s back!
